In the early morning hours of 8 January 2012, the Panamanian flagged MV Tycoon broke its mooring in Flying Fish Cove, Christmas Island. It drifted into the cliff side with 15 crew on board. The ship, built in 1983 in Japan, suffered tears and other damage down one side of its hull as it tore against the rocks. It spilled tonnes of oil, diesel and phosphate onto Christmas Island's reef. The ribbon of pristine coral reef that surrounds the island was fortunate to survive this maritime disaster.
